There is also some other things in that light box i am not understanding. One is the power coming into the box the other black is power going to the light.

Light switch only has one black wire. This is a typical wiring setup for a 3 way light switch with black white red and ground wires. I have 4 installed like this. So usually a standard single pole dumb switch has two blacks. The switch mounting box is made for a double light switch but only has 1 switch mounted in it. I would check that the load wire probably black is securely connected to the screw labeled load.
