The fillet should be as big as the minium member. Its very easy to blow through an 88 axle tube. The guy i use to shorten axle tubes has complained about them often. The sleeve is plug welded at 4 6 locations and then welded at the joint so they can be welded easier without fear of blowing through.

I am thinking about welding my axle tubes on my 88 and i was worrying about frying my bearings and seals with the heat from the welding have you had any problems with this. First post what. The center sections are cast steel and unlike cast iron cast steel is easily and fully weldable with tig gmac mig or good old arc.
